Living in an Abstract World

I dream of a world where we won’t get our superiority from the uncertainty of others. Where we don’t mistake kindness for weakness. Where we co-exist and not just exist.

I always tell my husband and daughter that I was born in the wrong era. I am fascinated with everything old. I enjoy listening to music from the late 50’s to the late 70’s. I love how their dresses look. I love their way of living and the laid back simplicity of it.

I love how people are more connected. Genuine. Kindhearted. Physically present. Full of existence…

I took this photo while on lunch break at work, in one of the oldest building at the university. I love how it illuminated the whole room. But then looking at the picture, how can the outside be so dark? Isn’t our life like that?

I always look at people as people. Colors, races, societal standings and their way of living doesn’t exist. No name callings. Sometimes I wonder if they look at me the same?

As we were travelling on the way to the allergist yesterday, another driver passed us by, gave my husband a look and shook his head…like he did something wrong. I told my husband, people are getting meaner and meaner. Have you noticed it lately? We are getting so selfish and self-centered that we forget the existence of other people. We know that they are there,  but – without actually seeing them. We forgot to treat and look at people with respect. We are so busy calling them names that we forgot who they really are. We live in a world of self gratification and lies and I-blame-the-other-person mentality. It is always you, not I.

As we were stuck in traffic, this image caught my eyes. Naturally, I had to capture it. As I looked at the side mirror, I felt like, although I am in the same place…I am looking at two different worlds.

You know what separates people? It’s not our colors, our ethnicity or our standings in society. It is our desire to be over the other. It is our belief that kindness is always associated with being weak and wanting something in return. Blaming others for being hurt instead of admitting we were unkind.

Summer time at work means “team work” most times. This is the time where we are supposed to have a chance to bond with each other and build a much stronger relationship. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Most days, it is about who does the most work, who can get away with doing nothing and who gets to take advantage of who.

I can’t count how many times I’ve been told that I need to quit being nice. A trait that nowadays, screams weakness. You will be taken advantage of. Isn’t it a sad world that for us to equally co-exist with others we have to be tough and mean….treat them as how they treat you. Much better if you outdo the other…this is now what we call humankind.

Perhaps, I am living in an abstract world. Where everything only exists in my thoughts. No physical or concrete existence. Here but nobody can actually see.
