There are mornings when I find myself quietly thinking about how much of life I have been given, and how little I sometimes stop to acknowledge it.
Not because I am ungrateful. Perhaps life simply has a way of keeping us moving. We wake up, go about our days, tend to the things that need our attention, worry about what has yet to happen, and sometimes become so occupied with what we are hoping for that we forget to look at what is already here.
And then, in a quiet moment, something inside us pauses.
Lord, have I thanked You enough?
Have I thanked You for the mornings I was able to wake up and begin again? For the days that went exactly as they should, and even for the ones that didn’t? For the prayers You answered in ways I recognized, and for the ones whose answers I may never fully understand?
I wonder how many times I have walked through an ordinary day without realizing that there was nothing ordinary about being given another one.
How many times have I asked You for something more while overlooking the goodness already woven into my life?
It is easy to recognize a blessing when it arrives in the form of something we have been waiting for. We celebrate the answered prayer, the unexpected opportunity, the door that finally opens. But some of Your greatest gifts arrive quietly. They do not announce themselves. They are found in the familiar faces we get to see, in the comfort of home, in a moment of laughter, in the strength to get through a difficult day, and in the simple assurance that we are not walking through this life alone.
And perhaps that is where gratitude becomes something deeper than saying thank You.
It becomes a way of seeing.
A way of recognizing that even when life is unfinished, there is still so much goodness in it. That even when some prayers remain unanswered, there are reasons to be grateful. That even in seasons when we cannot make sense of everything, we can still find something beautiful in the fact that we have been carried this far.
I think about the things I once prayed for that have quietly become part of my everyday life. Things I may have been so relieved to receive that I have since grown accustomed to having them. It makes me wonder how many blessings have become familiar enough that I no longer see them with the same wonder I once did.
Forgive me, Lord, for the times I have been so focused on what is missing that I have overlooked what is present.
Not every day has been easy. Not every season has been gentle. There have been moments when I did not understand what You were doing, when my heart was tired, and when all I could manage was a prayer without many words. But looking back, I can see that even those days were part of a story I was never meant to understand all at once.
And here I am, still finding reasons to hope, still discovering little things that make life beautiful, still being given moments I did not know I would one day be grateful for.
Maybe I do not say thank You as often as I should. Maybe I sometimes forget that the very things I once asked You for are now the things I live with every day.
So today, I do not want my prayers to be filled only with requests. I want to make room for gratitude, too. Not because everything is perfect, but because even in an imperfect life, there is so much that deserves to be noticed.
Thank You for what I have seen, and for what I have yet to understand. Thank You for the blessings I recognize, and for those that have passed quietly through my days without my knowing.
And if I have not thanked You enough, Lord, let me become more mindful of the life I have been given.
Let me not become so accustomed to Your goodness that I forget to be grateful for it.
“Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” Psalm 103:2
With a grateful heart,
