There are little things that happen in life that make you pause and quietly feel grateful.
Not the big, life-changing things.
Just small moments that remind you that perhaps our lives touch one another in ways we don’t always see.
Lately, I’ve been having one of those moments.
I’ve noticed people from different parts of the world finding their way to my writing.
Some from places I’ve never been.
Some reading things I wrote a long time ago.
And I find myself smiling at the thought.
Somewhere, someone I will probably never meet is sitting with words that once came from me.
I don’t know how they found their way here.
Maybe they were looking for something.
Maybe a search led them to one of my old posts.
Maybe someone shared a link.
Maybe they simply wandered in.
I don’t really need to know.
There is something rather lovely about not knowing.
Because writing is such a personal thing.
Most of the time, I write from a very small place.
A thought that stayed with me.
Something I noticed.
A conversation.
A memory.
A question I couldn’t quite let go of.
Sometimes it is something I have lived through. Sometimes it is simply something I have been thinking about.
I sit down, write it out, and eventually put it somewhere beyond myself.
And then I go on with my life.
But the words stay.
They sit there quietly, long after the moment that inspired them has passed.
And apparently, sometimes, they travel.
Farther than I ever expected.
That is the part that makes me pause.
Because I think we often imagine our words reaching the people closest to us.
The people who know us.
The people who know the stories behind them.
But there are also people who know nothing about us at all.
They don’t know where we grew up.
They don’t know what our lives look like.
They don’t know the circumstances behind something we wrote.
They simply come across the words.
And for a few minutes, something we thought about in our own little corner of the world becomes part of someone else’s day.
I find that incredibly humbling.
Especially when I see that someone has gone back and read something old.
Something I may have almost forgotten writing.
It reminds me that we don’t always know when something we’ve said will matter to someone.
A thought doesn’t necessarily stop being meaningful because we wrote it a year ago.
Sometimes it is simply waiting for the right person to find it.
And perhaps that is true of more than writing.
We rarely know the quiet ways something we have done, said, created, or shared has reached another person.
We may never hear about it.
There may be no comment.
No message.
No indication that it mattered.
And yet, it may have.
I’ve been thinking about that lately.
About all the quiet connections happening between people who will probably never know one another.
Someone writes.
Someone reads.
And somewhere between those two moments, there is a small meeting.
No introduction.
No conversation.
Just a few words crossing a distance.
I don’t know who you are, if you’re one of the people who has found your way here from somewhere I’ve never been.
I don’t know what brought you.
And I don’t know what you found.
But I’m grateful you stopped.
Because every now and then, it is nice to be reminded that what we put into the world can travel farther than we can.
And perhaps that is enough.
To write from the heart.
To let the words go.
And to trust that, somewhere in the world, they may find someone.
Someone who needed them.
Someone who was simply curious.
Or someone who, like me, just happened to be looking for something and found a little more than they expected.
I think I’ll keep writing.
And you can keep finding your way here.
Wherever in the world you may be.
Until next time,
