Our Kintsugi

Nowadays, we have all kinds of applications and filters to make everything look good, perfect, and unblemished. We have everything we can use to hide our flaws and everything else that we think of as imperfections.

Kintsugi is the art of repairing broken pottery with gold, highlighting the cracks rather than hiding them. It symbolizes embracing flaws as part of the history of an object.

But unlike kintsugi, the filters hide and cover up our flaws rather than highlighting them.

Embracing our flaws instead of hiding them…what a brave thing to do, isn’t it?

But, is this just limited to our physical flaws?

A lot of us are afraid to talk about everything that doesn’t sound perfect or look polished.

How do we cover the cracks that are hidden?

How do we highlight untold stories that are part of our history?

Can you imagine a broken heart repaired and highlighted with gold that shows how many times it was broken?

But the truth is, many of our hidden cracks, many of our untold stories, many of our broken hearts, we hid them. We bury them. We cover them up with our own make-believe filters.

Kintsugi talks about repairing a broken pottery with proper care, with attention, and love.

The idea of accepting and highlighting our flaws and brokenness is a beautiful thing.

But behind every kintsugi, behind every streak of gold, behind every highlighted cracks that shows our history…

Is someone who broke it and a potter who took care of repairing it.

Now, isn’t our kintsugi beautiful?

Until next time,
