Some ideas do not begin as plans.
They begin as moments.
Quiet ones.
The kind that almost pass unnoticed if we are not paying attention.
One mid-morning, I was sitting at our dining table writing when I noticed a small bird perched on the stair rail outside. It was not doing anything remarkable. It simply sat there with its wings folded, looking out into the open sky.
Something about that stillness caught my attention.
I hurried to my room to get my camera, hoping the little bird would still be there when I returned. When I came back, I stayed just inside the door and carefully lifted the camera, taking the photograph through the glass so I would not disturb it.
To my surprise, it had not moved.
It remained there quietly, as though it had simply paused between flights.
That photograph stayed with me.
Not because it was dramatic or extraordinary, but because of the quiet message it seemed to carry.
The bird was not flying.
It was resting.
And somewhere in that simple image, a gentle thought began to form in my heart.
We spend so much of our lives learning how to fly.
We learn how to work harder, carry responsibilities, overcome disappointments, and keep moving forward even when the skies feel uncertain. Strength becomes something we admire in ourselves and in others.
But there are seasons when even the strongest wings grow tired.
And perhaps that is where faith begins to speak most softly.
Not in the moments when we prove how strong we are, but in the moments when we realize we do not have to carry everything alone.

That small photograph eventually became the quiet inspiration behind my newest book, Resting on the Wings of God: Where Flight Ends and Faith Begins.
This book is a collection of reflections about trust, surrender, and the gentle reminder that while life may teach us how to fly, we were never meant to carry the sky by ourselves.
Sometimes the most sacred place we can be is not striving, climbing, or proving our strength.
Sometimes it is simply learning how to rest.
Rest in faith.
Rest in trust.
Rest in the quiet assurance that God is carrying us in ways we may not always see.
The photograph on the cover of the book still holds a special place in my heart. Some of you may recognize it, as it has been displayed in a local medical facility for some time now. I have always carried a small dream of seeing some of my favorite photographs one day hanging in a gallery.
Perhaps that will happen someday.
But for now, I find a quiet kind of joy in knowing that this small bird, resting peacefully on a wooden rail, has found another place to live — on the cover of a book that speaks about rest, faith, and the grace of being carried.
If this little book finds its way to someone who needs a moment of stillness or encouragement, then it has already fulfilled its purpose.
Because sometimes the most beautiful part of the journey is not learning how to fly.
It is discovering that we were never flying alone.
