The Things We Lose Without Knowing

It’s strange how easy it is to lose pieces of ourselves without even realizing it. One scroll at a time. One harmless reel after another. We laugh, we double-tap, we share — until little by little, the things that once made us uncomfortable start to feel normal.

It doesn’t happen overnight. It’s subtle — almost innocent. A joke that crosses a line but still makes us smile. A trend that makes light of something sacred. A clip that shows what shouldn’t be shown, yet we watch anyway because “it’s just for fun.” But every time we do, something inside us shifts. Just a little.

We start to see the world differently. Our values soften around the edges. What used to be wrong starts to look “not that bad.” And without noticing, our hearts begin to lose their sensitivity — the quiet knowing of what’s right and good.

It’s not about being perfect or pretending we’re above it all. We’re all just trying to navigate this noisy world. But it’s worth asking ourselves sometimes: What am I feeding my soul with? Because everything we see, laugh at, and spend time with shapes who we are becoming.

The truth is, the enemy doesn’t always come dressed in something dark and frightening. Sometimes he comes disguised in what looks like fun — a quick distraction, a harmless trend, a little entertainment. And while we’re busy laughing, he’s busy dulling our hearts.

So maybe it’s time to pause. To be a little more mindful of what we consume and what we call “just for fun.” Maybe it’s time to choose what uplifts instead of what numbs. To fill our minds with light instead of noise.

Our souls are too precious to trade for temporary amusement. Let’s guard them — gently, consciously, and with love.

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

— Proverbs 4:23
